Frequently Asked Questions

What is "Open Door"?
Association La Porte Ouverte, better known as “Open Door” is a non-profit making Association set up in accordance with the French Law of 1901 with the object of providing support to people who are suffering from the effects of long term illness whether as a sufferer or carer.

What are the Aims of "Open Door"?
To offer non-intervention and non-judgmental support to those with long term illness or people suffering the effects of bereavement, family crises, addiction and loneliness and to their families and carers.

Is "Open Door" available to everyone?
Indeed it is.  Our statutes make us available to everyone irrespective of race, colour, creed or religion and we are not part of any church, organization or commercial enterprise.

How is the Association financed?
We are financed by the generosity of our donators and volunteers.  We receive no money from the state or any other organizations and rely on donations, gifts and our own fund raising efforts.

How will you spend any money I may send you?
It will be used to support the drop-in centre in Civray by paying the running costs of the building. (The Association does not pay any rent to the owners). By providing training courses for our listeners and counsellors and by meeting their out of pocket expenses.  Our income and expenses are analyzed by our Treasurer and the account books are always available for inspection.  Very little is spent on administration as we are staffed by volunteers and pay no wages.

Who’s in charge?
There are three main “officers” of the Association, the President (Lynn), the Treasurer (Tony) and the Secretary (Hélene) assisted by two others (Sheila and Mike) who help in the decision making of the Executive and input ideas and enthusiasm.  The Executive offer themselves for re-election at each Annual General Meeting of the Association.  None of the Executive receive any remuneration for their work.

How can I help?
Financial help can be in the form of gifts or donations of money, or by becoming a Friend, by collecting your small change and sending it to us or by holding a fund-raising event on our behalf.

If you would like to directly help some of the people who turn to us for assistance then you may consider being an active listener (in which case our training course will have to be undertaken) or be on our list of counsellors and help improve our coverage of the Poitou-Charentes region.  We would obviously welcome people who have professional qualifications in this or related fields.

Alternatively, if you live near Civray, you may help us at the drop-in centre with meeting and greeting people, making teas and coffees, helping with the library or helping out for and hour or two at one of out fund raising events.

Must I be a member of the Association to receive help?
No.  You do not have to be a member to receive any help from us and we make no charge for our services.  As already explained we do depend on donations and fund raising to survive, so if you feel that you would like others to receive our help we would not refuse a donation from you.

How will I keep in touch with events?
By regular logging on to this web site or by becoming a Friend of Open Door and receiving our Newsletter.
